Leadership Concepts

In terms of any life we always need a strong leader who is expected to be able to give encouragement and direction to the guiding group, as well as be able to be an example that attracts subordinates to do the same.

Leadership concept is something important to know for everyone. We should know that leadership does not fall from the sky. It must grow in a person's personality. He demanded certain talents, good guidance through the process of education or daily life experience. Therefore, on the essential points that are the absolute demands that are a must for a leader and a prospective leader.

Understanding leadership

The term leadership is a form of English word which is originally a leader meaning leader; talented leaders; figure.

Leadership in etymology can be interpreted as "means one's ability and personality in influencing and persuading others in order to achieve the goals of achieving common goals so as to be the beginning of the structure and center of the group process. "

Elizabeth O'Leary mentions the common definition or beliefs of leaders and leadership, that leaders are people who are designated in a group or team or organization.

The leader's concept is a charismatic figure who is able to make the best decisions and inspire others to achieve common goals. While leadership is the power to communicate firmly and inspire others and the ability to influence others.

Leadership is a means of moving the organizational wheel which is ultimately one of the functions of management. It would be natural if the leadership should be studied by the leaders (managers).

On the other hand there is an opinion that "leadership is the core of management" on the ground that management is primarily related to humans.

Leadership Concept

Leadership in the eyes of experts, especially the social sciences is still a lot of different interpretations, in accordance with the approach he uses. In general terms of leadership is defined as "the ability and readiness to inspire, guide, direct, or manage other" (Good, 1973).

The concept of leadership also means that leadership is a person's ability and readiness to influence, guide, and direct or manage others so that they will do something to achieve common goals.

Wills (1967) conveys the limits that leadership is the whole form of help one can provide for the setting of group goals.

While Siagian (1983) states leadership should be interpreted as the ability to influence and motivate others to be willing, able, and able to follow the wishes of management for the achievement of objectives that have been determined before with efficient, effective, and economical.

Tannenbaum, Weschler, and Massarik (1961) said "We difine leadership as interpersonal influence, exercised in situation and directed through the communication process, toward the attainment of a specific goal or goal."

Leadership is defined as interpersonal capability to influences, trained in situations and directed through communication processes to achieve specific goals or objectives.

Fiedler (1967) says that "Leadership is the process of influencing group activities toward goal setting and goal achievement," so leadership is defined as the process of influencing group activities to set goals and achieve goals.

Terry (1972) gives the definition that "Leadeship is the relationship in which one person, or the leader, influence others to work together."

Hersey and Blanchard (1982) stated that "Leadership is the process of influencing the activities of an individual," or leadership is nothing but the process of influencing the activities of an individual or a group in an attempt to achieve a goal in a given situation.

Elements of leadership

Leadership can in fact appear anywhere, when there are elements of leadership. The elements of leadership include:
(1) there are those who lead or influence,
(2) any affected or follower, subordinate or controlled group,
(3) the existence of certain activities in moving subordinates to achieve common goals, and
(4) the purpose of which is fought through a series of actions.

The power of the leader

Leadership with regard to a person affects the behavior of others for a purpose. With power, leaders can influence the behavior of their subordinates. Power can be divided into five, namely: (1) expert power; (2) legitimate power; (3) referent power; (4) reward power; and (5) coercive power.

In addition to dealing with power, leadership is also closely related to character. Various research efforts were conducted to identify characters consistent with leadership.

However, research efforts undertaken to separate the character of leadership have met many dead ends. Searching to identify a set of characters that differentiates leaders and followers, and between effective and ineffective leaders, many fail.

The most acceptable result is research aimed solely at identifying characters that can be associated consistently with leadership.
