Frank Walter Steinmeier: Current Leader of Germany

Who is the current German leader? The German Federal Assembly has made a decision. Frank-Walter Steinmeier was elected President of Germany for the 2017-2022 term. The former foreign minister will decide incumbent President Joachim Gauck who decides not to advance for the second period because he claims he is old.

Steimer received 931 votes from 1,239 votes entered, as reported by AFP. The vote was held in the Reichstag Building by the Federal Council consisting of national legislators and representatives from 16 German states. This election made Frank Walter Steinmeier become the current president of Germany for the next few years.

Although most of them carry out ceremonial duties, the president's position remains to discuss as an important key symbol in the German state. The German Daily welcomed Steinmeier's election as president as a consensus as Germany struggled with difficult times regarding refugee politics.

The German press cites, this country asks politicians who discuss what important themes are and are dislike to talk much. The World Receives figures who learn how to emit an actual anti-EU tendency. Also Europe needs strong figures to reduce the rise of populism.

German media also quoted, in difficult times it is good to get a president who can say something and at the same time want to talk. Steinmeier has proven his capacity in the international political order, in resolving various crises, when he was still a foreign minister.

However, as a new president, he now has a heavy duty. The German president must be able to continue to unite German citizens so as not to be poisoned by conflicting ideology of populism and nationalism. Even so, some well-known German media also supported that "consensus" in choosing Steinmeier as the new president of Germany could result in polarization of German domestic politics.

During this time, the 61-year-old man was an anti-Donald Trump figure. Steinmeier's election was especially positive by the political elite in Germany. Many hope Steinmeier can be a breath of fresh air during conversations with nationalism and comfortable world conversation due to US President Donald Trump's politics.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated: “Steinemeier will be a high-achieving president in this difficult time”.

Profile of Frank-Walter Steinmeier

Frank-Walter Steinmeier was born in Detmold, North-Rhine Westphalia, on January 5, 1956. He was born to a couple of carpenters as well as church activists and a refugee from Poland.

Little Frank-Walter studied at Grammar School in Blomberg in 1966-1974. After graduating, he then underwent military service in 1974-1976. In the midst of his obligation to serve the country, young Steinmeier joined the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in 1975.

After completing his military service, Frank-Walter then studied higher education at Justus Liebig University Giessen or University of Giessen majoring in law in 1976. He then majored in political science in 1980 and graduated in 1982. Some time later, he successfully passed the state examination the first law.

Frank-Walter then participated in legal training in Frankfurt am Main and Giessen in the period 1983-1986. He successfully passed the state law exam for the second time after completing the training.

He began his career as a Research Assistant and Chair of the Public Law and Political Sciences Division at the Giessen University Law Department in 1986. He held the position until 1991. His career in the government began as a legal advisor for media law and policy in the Lower Saxony State Council .

His career began to climb when he was appointed as Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister of the State of Lower Saxony in the period 1993-1994. Frank-Walter was later trusted as Chair of the Department in the Lower Saxony Parliament who was responsible for the inter-ministerial coordination and planning policy guidelines from 1994-1996.

Frank-Walter was then appointed as the Foreign Minister of the Lower Saxony State in 1996-1998 and rose to become the Commissioner of the German Federal Intelligence Agency in 1998-1999. His career was increasingly shot after being elected as Chief of Staff of the Office of the Prime Minister of the State of Lower Saxony in 1999-2005. And now, he is the current leader of Germany.
